Due to delays with the National Skills Council, the Nationally Accredited Certificate III/IV Podiatric Assistants Course will not be available until 2007. However due to the overwhelming amount of interest in the course, the South Australian Association will continue to run the existing distance learning course commencing 6 November 2006 (refer below for course outline). The course will be conducted by correspondence and consists of six assignments followed by a
one weekend workshop held in Adelaide at the University of South Australia.
Lectures:
- Introduction to Podiatry & Terminology
Understand terminology commonly used within a podiatry practice. Recognise, identify and know
the use of the treatment and diagnostic instruments as well as dressings and materials used
by podiatrists.
- Patient Management & Office Procedures
Gain an insight into dealing with patients and how to deal with common administrative
problems.
- Anatomy & Physiology
Gain knowledge of the boney and soft tissue structure of the human body, with emphasis on the
lower limb as well as the nervous and endocrine systems.
- Sterilisation
Lecture covers infection control, instrument cleaning and preparation prior to sterilisation
and disposal of sharps and protection.
- Lower Limb disorders (Pathology)
Identify high risk patients, demonstrate some knowledge of pathological conditions which result
in patients being classified as high risk and knowledge of podiatric dermatological conditions
and various systemic disorders that manifest themselves in the lower limbs.
- Book-keeping
Cash float, appointment book, balancing, banking procedures, receipts, accounts, petty cash,
fee schedule, etc.
Workshop:
The workshop is held at the University of South Australia and covers sterilisation,
clinical assisting, operative assisting and review of pathology via slides.
