Strong healthy feet begin in childhood. In later years, comfortable feet ensure mobility and contribute to continued general health, circulation and independence of lifestyle. Many adults by age 25 are already experiencing moderate to severe problems with their feet. Widespread use of concrete flooring in the workplace, shops and schools can hasten the development of problems associated with an inherited foot structure. Concrete does not yield or 'spring' and sends 'shock waves' through the bones of the feet, legs and spine. Young children's feet up until puberty may not hurt, even if there is a potentially severe foot fault developing. Until hard mineral is laid down in the bones (between age 14-16) the bones are relatively soft and can be deformed painlessly. Early detection and management can halt or reverse poor foot function. Good feet influence overall posture. Much childhood nail and skin conditions are a result of incorrect foot care or footwear, for example, infected in-grown nails. With an increasing number of children participating in sport and dance, teachers, coaches and parents should be alert to the child who always suffers minor foot and knee injuries and seek professional advice. These recreational activities require footwear and socks appropriate to the activity, the ground surface and the child's foot structure and weight. Parents should ensure their children have current immunisation for polio. This disease in its mildest form leaves paralysed muscles in the foot and leg. Disturbance to the muscles or nerves will alter the way a person walks. In time this will place undue stress on parts of the foot and disabling calluses, corns and ulcers may develop. Diabetics often have foot problems and need regular care. Regular foot checks are as essential as getting teeth and eyes checked. Parents can teach and supervise their children in correct and healthy foot care habits. Shoe wear patterns should be observed and the fit checked regularly. Children's feet have growth spurts and shoe size will rapidly alter, often unnoticed by the child. Feet take enormous punishment. Good foot health in childhood and regular checkups will get the best mileage from feet over a lifetime.
