The role of the Assistant in Podiatry

The Assistants role is to assist the podiatrist with organisational and administration related activities

relevant to clinical consultation such as the following:

• Prepare the consultation area;
• Assist the patient before and after the consultation; and
• Assist with the generation and maintenance of medical records.

The Assistant can as part of their role undertake the following ‘patient care’ duties:

• Assist the podiatrist with patient assessment, such as documenting basic information which does not     

require interpretation
• Apply basic dressings, padding and strapping under the direction of the podiatrist; and
• Assist the podiatrist during minor skin and nail procedures.

The Assistant is also trained to perform the following functions on low risk patients, under the supervision of a podiatrist:

• Basic foot hygiene, once the patient has received appropriate assessment by the supervising podiatrist and a care plan developed and referral made.

Assistant to Podiatry Training

POD In Health Training provides the nationally accredited training of the Podiatry Units from the Allied Health Assistance Package (HLT42507) at Certificate IV level.  Candidates suitable for this course include employees working in a podiatry setting, enrolled and registered nursing staff, paramedical aids and carers. The course requires on-the job supervision by a registered podiatrist who assists the student with the clinical aspects of the course. 

The following podiatry units are available:

  • Assist with Basic Foot Hygiene
  • Assist with Podiatric Procedures
  • Assist with Podiatry Assessment and Exercise
  • Process Reusable Instruments and Equipment in Health Work
  • Implement and Monitor Infection Control Policies and Procedures
  • Assist with Practice Administration

Delivery Mode

The above listed Podiatry Units is a distance learning program with on-the-job training requirements.  The course commences with a two day weekend workshop held at the University of South Australia's Podiatry Clinic.  Students are provided with a pre-course workbook prior to the workshop to prepare for the course and familiarise them with podiatry terminology, the relevant legislation requirements and an anatomy overview.  Students are provided with 6 workbooks at the intial weekend workshop which they are able to work through at their own pace during a time suitable.  Students maintain regular communication with the trainers and Program Leader is through regular email contact (or phone if email is unsuitable). A final assessment workshop is held to finalize the course (around 6-7 months after commencement workshop).
Once competent the student receives a Statement of Attainment for the Podiatry Units.  If the student wishes to complete the full Certificate IV Allied Health qualification, the statement of attainment acknowledges the podiatry units for which they received RPL.

Trainers

Our trainers are registered, practicing podiatrists with extensive professional experience.  All trainers are VET qualified and have a diverse range of training experience including University Lecturers, private trainers for specific health groups, Government and Professional Body Representatives.

Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is available for students that meet the competent criteria.  Students undertaking the podiatry units are often eligible for RPL as some may have certificate, diploma and degree health qualifications and experience.  Please advise us on the enrolment form if you prefer to be assessed for RPL for specific units.

Cost

For students undertaking the podiatry units only which includes the two workshops and 6 workbooks    $1,440

Funding opportunities for the Full Certificate IV qualification is occassional available through the Productivity Placement Program (PPP)

Full Qualification - Certificate IV Allied Health Assistance (HLT07)

POD In Health Training offers the Podiatry Units of the Allied Health Assistance Certificate IV course. Students can elect to complete the Podiatry Units ONLY and receive a certificate of attainment OR they can complete the full certificate IV by completing the mandatory competency units with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
